The CRIIA Institute, together with Guatemala’s Ministry of Education (MINEDUC) and the UNESCO Representation, has promoted the creation and launch of a Technical Working Group on Rural Education in the country. Its main goal is to develop a National Rural Education Strategy for Guatemala. This Working Group, chaired by Technical Vice-Minister Francisco Cabrera, includes technical representatives from MINEDUC, UNESCO, EFPEM-USAC (the School of Teacher Training for Secondary Education at the University of San Carlos of Guatemala), and the CRIIA Institute.
The presentation took place within the framework of an International Day on Rural Education. The opening ceremony featured the participation of Rafael Zavala, FAO Representative in Guatemala; Patricio Zambrano, UNESCO Representative; Lucrecia Crispín, Director of EFPEM-USAC; Jordi González, Secretary-General of AIMFR; Manuel Aguiar, President of the CRIIA Institute; and the aforementioned Minister and Vice-Minister. The keynote address was delivered by Dr. Roser Boix from the University of Barcelona (Spain) under the theme: “The Role of Rural Schools in the Territory.” Dr. Evelyn Jacir de Lovo, former Minister of Education of El Salvador, followed with a talk on “Challenges for Rural Education in Central America.” Dr. Óscar Hugo López, Director of USAC’s Institute for Educational Research, presented the CEFFA study focused on Guatemala, followed by a panel of experts from universities in Argentina, Canada, Spain, Guatemala, and Peru.
